Electrolyte drinks are perfect for rehydrating and replenishing after physical exertion. But that’s not it … while they’re great to drink during and after intense exercise, they’re also helpful during colds, flu, food poisoning, working in hot/extreme temperatures, and even for women during labor. Tropical electrolyte drink is one of the most delicious things out there.
I love a good electrolyte drink, but not the commercial sports drinks or Pedialyte. Have you taken a peak at the ingredients?
Water, Sugar, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Salt, Sodium Citrate, Monopotassium Phosphate, Gum Arabic, Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate, Glycerol Ester of Rosin, Yellow 6 – Gatorade Orange Flavor
Water, Dextrose. Less than 2% of the Following: Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate, Salt, Sodium Citrate, Natural Flavor, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Zinc Gluconate, Red 40, and Blue 1. – Pedialyte Strawberry Flavor
Sugars, preservatives, food dyes and “natural” flavorings? No thanks! Those are not ingredients I am comfortable giving to my family or putting in my own body.
I am all about nourishing the body, especially during times of illness or after any kind of physical stress on the body – whether that means exercise, training or the biggest physical exertion ever … laboring and giving birth … nothing tops that in my opinion.
Usually my go-to for nourishment is bone broth, especially during illness or when it comes to boosting the immune system. But when it comes to physical exercise, warm broth is the last thing on my mind. I want something cold, refreshing and thirst-quenching.
About the Tropical Electrolyte Drink Ingredients …
Coconut Water is known as nature’s “sports drink.” It helps keep the body hydrated and replaces vital minerals lost during physical exertion. It has a lot more naturally occurring potassium than the common sports drink Gatorade. Potassium is an essential electrolyte that needs to be replaced after dehydration. Coconut water is also known to help alleviate vomiting – making it a wonderful labor-aid as well as helpful during illness or food poisoning. That is why it makes the perfect based for an electrolyte drink.
Hibiscus, specifically the herbal tea, is commonly known for it’s refreshing, tropical taste. A favorite summertime drink for many. It also happens to be full of antioxidants and is known for helping regulate a normal body temperature.
Celtic Sea Salt or Himalayan Pink Salt contains vital trace minerals and electrolytes. This is crucial after physical exertion, excessive sweating or during illness. Water is simply not enough, our bodies need sea salt to stay healthy.
Raw Honey is naturally antibacterial and contains naturally occurring enzymes, vitamins and minerals. It’s also an easily digestible sugar which gives you a little energy boost.
Fresh Orange Juice is rich in minerals and high in vitamin C {important for boosting the immune system}. Like the raw honey, it’s an easily digestible sugar and helps provide a little energy boost.
Whether it’s soccer practice, boxing, cross fit, yoga, you’re feeling under the weather, you’re getting ready to have a baby or you simply have kiddos that love to run around and get all sweaty … you’re probably looking for a way to stay hydrated. So make up a batch of some Homemade Tropical Electrolyte Drink and reap the benefits of this natural rehydrating drink.

Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons organic dried hibiscus flowers
- 1 teaspoon organic dried orange peel
- 1 cup filtered water
- 2 tablespoons light colored raw honey
- 1 organic orange, freshly juiced
- 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Celtic sea salt
- 3 cups cold coconut water
Instructions
- Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add hibiscus flowers and orange peel. Remove from heat, COVER with a lid and let steep for 1 hour. Strain and allow to cool to at least room temperature {I place it in the refrigerator or in the freezer for about 15 minutes to chill it fast}.
- In a large pitcher, large glass measuring cup or mixing bowl, add the raw honey, fresh orange juice and salt. Stir until the honey has dissolved.
- Add cold hibiscus tea and cold coconut water to the orange-honey-salt mixture. Stir until all ingredients are incorporated.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Notes
*I use Taste Nirvana coconut water. I prefer this brand to others for several reasons:
- I can buy it in glass bottles
- t's organic and harvested from young coconuts even though it's not labeled as organic
- It tastes SO much better than other brands
- It's considered one of the healthiest coconut water brands.
You can replace the coconut water with filtered water if you don't care for the taste of coconut water.
If you have a little one who is not open to sipping on this all day, try freezing the mixture in popsicle molds instead.
This drink is not for babies under 1 year of age due to the raw honey.
