Did you know it’s so easy to make your own chocolate milk?!
I’m guessing most of us grew up with Hershey’s chocolate syrup … and enjoyed it. No? Just me? Well, I remember the dark brown cans filled with chocolate sauce, the cans that came before the plastic bottles. My grandma always had the Hershey’s cans when I would come for a visit. There was always round ice cubes stocked in the freezer to have glasses of cold milk too.
I have never been a milk drinker, I just don’t like the taste. But when my grandma added tons of those perfect round ice cubes to a tall glass and filled it up with milk, for some reason I just loved it. But I especially loved it when she made me chocolate milk. I would watch her pour that beautiful dark brown chocolate syrup into the glass of milk and stir it up. I enjoyed that icy-cold chocolate milk down to the last drop. Such fun memories.
We can all pretty much agree that chocolate milk is a fun childhood favorite, right? But here’s the deal, that Hershey’s chocolate syrup that so many of us grew up with is loaded with unhealthy stuff. I don’t know about you but I’m not okay serving that to my family. Have you seen the ingredients?
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Water, Cocoa, Sugar, Contains 2% or less of: Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Salt, Mono- and Diglycerides, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 60, Vanillin, Artificial Flavor”
No thanks. Let’s not forget that MSG is allowed under the title “artificial flavor” too … when you see that term, you really never know what you’re going to get. And don’t get me started on the sugar free version, that one is loaded with even more junk and chemicals! Why put that stuff into your body when it’s so easy to make your own?
So here’s the deal … all you need is a few simple ingredients and you’re good to go.
My Real Food Chocolate Syrup Ingredients:
- Raw Cacao Powder {you can use cocoa powder too, I just prefer cacao}
- Raw Honey
- Vanilla Extract
- Sea Salt {totally optional, but it adds some trace minerals and I love sweet + salty}
- Filtered Water
All real food ingredients that your body can recognize! Plus there’s no refined sugars in this version, just nourishing, real food sweetener – raw honey. This recipe is so simple + easy to throw together.
My kids love getting to make their own chocolate milk. I admit, I do too. Chocolate milk is such a fun drink. I craved it when I was pregnant and made this all the time when I wanted something sweet + icy-cold.
It’s totally up to you how much chocolate syrup you add to your milk. My girls usually have about a teaspoon per glass of milk, but you can make yours sweeter if you’d like.
So get yourself the ingredients if you don’t already have them and mix up a batch up this delicious chocolate syrup. Make some chocolate milk for yourself, surprise your kids with some for an afternoon snack or pack some in their lunch in an insulated bottle {so much better than those box or bottled versions}. The whole family will love this one!
You can also add it to smoothies, milkshakes, coffee drinks, hot chocolate … really anything you want. You could drizzle some on ice cream too, although I prefer making homemade fudge sauce for that … it’s thicker in consistency + super yummy.
Everyone is going to love this chocolate syrup, so go make some! Enjoy!
