The Natural Pet Care section of Hybrid Rasta Mama is expanding and will be covering a lot of important topics! While there are some great articles on natural health for pets, natural flea control, supplements for pet health, and more, the topics covered will continue to grow.

What is natural pet care?

Natural pet care is a concept that involves every aspect of our pet's lives, with the intention of coming as close to their natural environment as possible, while still providing safety and comfort. It includes nutrition, exercise, veterinary care, dental care, grooming, mental stimulation, and stress management.

Why practice natural pet care?

There is a long list of reasons why natural pet care is beneficial to your pets. Let's take a look at the top 7.

Natural products are time tested. All natural products have been around since the beginning of time. They’ve been used for countless different reasons and have an extremely long track record. People know if they work, when they work and what the side effects are. Newer products don’t have that benefit. Even though products are tested before being put on store shelves, the long-term effects may remain unknown well into the future.

Holistic and natural pet care takes the whole pet into account when he or she needs veterinary care.  Holistic pet care means to take a more “natural” and “common sense” approach to your pet’s health care while taking into account the whole animal, as in the mind, body, and spirit. Instead of trying to treat a specific problem, meaning a single issue, a holistic approach treats the whole pet to hopefully prevent further diseases, illnesses, and physical or mental pains. This is all while treating your pet for their current issue as well. With holistic care, regular vet check ups and testings are typically still recommended when choosing holistic pet care.

Your pet's health may improve. Natural pet foods are more likely to provide your cat or dog with better nutrition because your pet gets less chemicals and preservatives and more quality nutrients and vitamins. Because natural pet foods are made from leaner meats and whole grains (instead of simple, more sugary carbohydrates), your pet may be less likely to become obese.

Reduction in side-effects and allergic reactions. Natural and organically sourced products are well known for their quality. Products containing artificial ingredients can cause itching or skin irritation in pets.  They can also cause allergic reactions and irritate the gut lining. The likelihood of your dog, cat or other pet having a reaction to organic foods, toxin free toys, and natural medicine are much less than if you use conventional products.

Certain chemicals used on pets are not meant to be ingested.
Animals swallow, chew and lick just about anything, including those poisonous chemicals. Opting for natural pet care products will ensure your pet's health and safety.

Safe ways to manage stress and anxiety. Holistic therapies such as stress reducing herbs, stress reducing homeopathy, and flower essences are valuable tools for animals whose stress is affecting their health or behavior. Pheromone sprays can also create a calm, non-threatening environment for nervous or aggressive pets.

Human safety. Using natural products for your pets also reduces your chance of exposure to toxic products. Since pets are in frequent contact with people, especially children, it’s important to consider using natural, toxin-free products, rather than harsh chemicals.
