CBD oil is making headlines all over the world. From news stories to social media testimonials, it would appear that CBD oil is overtaking coconut oil as the “go-to” for natural health and wellness. While you all know by now that I love me some coconut oil, I have also been easing myself into the world of CBD oil with many positive results.
Not one to jump on just any natural health product, I had to thoroughly vet CBD oils before I tried it and before I shared my recommendations with all of you. Not all CBD oil is created equal. It was a lengthy process of asking questions, reading studies, and talking to people but I finally landed on the CBD oil brands that I use and love. (More on that in a second).

Everyone’s objectives for considering the use of CBD oil will be different. For some, it could be because they have heard that it promotes a general sense of well-being. For others, it may be because they are targeting a specific health concern and have read that CBD oil is known for aiding with it. Being able to replace a basket full of health supplements with CBD oil might be the motivation. Whatever the case, it is important to consider the following questions before determining if CBD oil is right for you!
Why Use CBD Oil?
Many people who use CBD oil do so because it does not have the same psychotropic effects that cannabis is known for. They are able to function normally without the “high” feeling associated with cannabis products heavy in THC. And yet, they still receive many of the same benefits.
CBD oil has a long list of possible health benefits. Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence has shown that CBD has medicinal and therapeutic effects for both the most common conditions as well as some more rare conditions. While results will vary based on the individual, most people notice an improved sense of general well being from using CBD oil.
- Reducing or preventing inflammation
- Rheumatoid & osteoarthritis
- Epilepsy & seizures
- Cardiovascular disease
Numerous people are reporting success in using CBD to reach a desired state of calm and relaxation. Now, let’s get a little sciency here… This is because CBD acts as a 5-HT1a receptor agonist in the brain. This means that CBD has calming and soothing effects much like some potent analgesics, but without the side effects.
During the hemp extraction process, high levels of CBD are produced as well as other nutrients including amino acids, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals, and even essential amino acids. A particularly wonderful benefit to CBD is that it has strong antioxidant properties because of this. Who couldn’t use more antioxidants to mitigate all the stress our bodies are under from toxins?
Because of CBD’s positive effects in reducing cortisol, it has a beneficial effect on the endocrine system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates your stress response. If you feel fried, wired, or unable to deal with life’s stressors, your HPA axis is likely dysregulated and CBD oil might help bring you back to center.
Initial studies on CBD and cancer are very promising. CBD may support apoptosis (programmed cell death that rids the body of old and damaged cells) and may also be effective against breast cancer by killing breast cancer cells.
Are There Negative Side Effects To Using CBD Oil?
That depends on what you define as side effects. For some, increased relaxation isn’t what they are seeking and as such, being more relaxed would be seen as negative. However, for most people, CBD oil will only have positive impacts in their lives.
Products with high CBD levels are generally considered safe. This paper on the Safety and side effects of cannabidiol by the NCBI suggests that controlled cannabidiol administration is safe and non-toxic in humans and animals. It also does not induce changes in food intake; nor does it affect physiological parameters like heart rate, body temperature or blood pressure.
Studies show that doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD oil are reportedly well tolerated in humans. However, there are a few known side effects of CBD including:
- Inhibition of hepatic drug metabolism/decreased activities of p-glycoprotein and other drug transporters
- Dry mouth
- Increased tremor in Parkinson’s patients
- Low blood pressure
- Light headedness
If you have a congested liver it is possible that you will not get the results you are seeking. Years of toxins build up and clog the liver which in effect means your liver does not detox toxins properly. This build up in the liver essentially backs up other systems in the body. When your body systems are not working properly, any supplement you take won’t be as effective as it could be. While the combination of CBD oil and a congested liver typically won’t cause any harm, the effects of the CBD oil might not be felt or reached.
Can You Pass A Drug Test While Taking CBD Oil?
This depends on which oil you choose! Some have a wee bit more THC than others. The official statement from the company that manufactures the oil I use is love is as follows: “Most workplace drug screens and tests target delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and do not detect the presence of Cannabidiols or other legal natural hemp based constituents. However, studies have shown that eating hemp foods and oils can cause confirmed positive results when screening urine and blood specimens. Accordingly, if you are subject to any form of drug testing or screening, we recommend (as does the United States Armed Services) that you DO-NOT ingest this product.”
How Affordable Is CBD Oil?
That depends! Not all CBD oils are created equal as I mentioned before. Plus there are gobs and gobs of different types of CBD products. Each of them has a different bio availability, amount of CBD per serving, and price point. It also depends on how much CBD oil you take.
In general terms, CBD oil is more affordable than smoking medicinal cannabis. If you aren’t after the THC euphoria, then smoking cannabis is not cost effective. Ingesting a nano-enhanced hemp oil will save you a ton of money and likely give you greater benefits. Since I have been able to reduce the number of other supplements I take, using this CBD oil is VERY affordable compared to all the other supplements I was on.
How Do You Use CBD Oil?
That depends on types of CBD products. There are tinctures, capsules, liquids, pastes, chews, vape liquid, salves, and more.
CBD is also effective topically, based on my personal observations. I have applied a few drops to sore areas on my back. Within 10 minutes, I have noticeable relief and within 20 minutes the pain disappears. There is also an amazing salve that I highly recommend.
Whichever oil you select will come with specific instructions. My advice is to start slowly and work up to the dosage you see the best results with. If a specific CBD oil is not giving you the results you want, it might simply not be the best one for you and your body.
