What A Pregnant Woman Really Needs

Welcome to the Pregnancy Necessities Carnival!

Yep – that’s me! I was only 6 months pregnant at the time. Big belly!

This post was written for inclusion in the Pregnancy Necessities Carnival hosted by Parenting God’s Children. Today, participants share what they simply cannot live without during their pregnancies or simply what to gather for their upcoming new addition. Please see the full list of links to the other carnival submissions at the end of this post. Enjoy!

I have only been pregnant once. And honestly, once was plenty. My pregnancy was a little rough. I had a couple of quirky medical issues. I also had a super stressful job which required extensive travel. Airplane travel, rental cars, and hotel rooms were the norm for the bulk of my pregnancy. So really, it was the little things that I craved most during my pregnancy. You know – like the ground beneath my feet and my own bed and pillow!

But seriously. There were not a lot of physical items and things that I could not live without while I was pregnant. For me, the necessities were more focused on the intangible. I needed emotional support as my pregnant hormones ran amuck. I needed words of wisdom from experienced mothers who could reassure me that yes, I would indeed be a good mom. I needed people to stop touching my belly without asking. I needed people to quit teasing me about getting fat. I needed people to stop telling me “horror birth stories.”

I longed for some peace and solitude at times. I wish that I had taken some sort of yoga class or engaged in meditation or other relaxation techniques. I wish I got more prenatal massages or at least a monthly foot rub!

But…if you would like a few suggestions on “things,” here is my pretty basic list. These are not ALL necessarily items I used during my pregnancy. Reflecting back I wish I had a few of these items or knew the benefits of having these items. In any event, here is my list.

  • Coconut Water for hydration
  • Cod Liver Oil to supply 20,000 IU vitamin A and 2000 IU vitamin D per day
  • Digestive Enzymes to stop heartburn before it starts
  • Ginger root and dried and/or candied ginger for nausea
  • A daily pregnancy affirmation email
  • A body pillow for when sleep got wickedly uncomfortable
  • An abundance of stretchy yoga pants and loose shirts
  • Wide slippers (I was clueless as to how much my feet would really swell)
  • A super large towel or two since my standard bath towels did not wrap around me once my belly bloomed
  • Essential oils specific to pregnancy to mix in coconut oil and rub all over me
  • Socks without a tight cuff
  • Bra extenders (loved those things!)
  • A way to record and journal my pregnancy
  • Two good pairs of pregnancy jeans
  • BIIIIIG underwear

And really, that is it. Pretty basic. There are all kinds of items that are marketed to the pregnant woman but really, most of superfluous.

What items could you NOT live without? Anything you wish you had but didn’t?

Ahhh yes, I had no clue my feet would get huge either. I live in flip flops because nothing else fit!

The touching surprisingly doesn’t bother me, but like Dionna mentioned in her comment…I can’t handle the bad birth stories!!

  2. says

    LOVE that pic! :)
Great idea on the big towel, that’s annoying to me, too, though I never thought to correct the issue!
And AMEN on the yoga pants. Now that it’s warm here, I think I’m permanently in my yoga capris!
    Thanks for participating! <3

Yes, bra extenders!! I forgot how much I loved those during pregnancy! And, I had never even heard of pregnancy undies until recently when it was too late, so I’m glad you were able to make use of them! I too relied much more on the intangible, but it is fun to see what people liked having on hand during their pregnancies!

  4. Dionna @ Code Name: Mama says

I am not one of those women who everyone feels like they can touch while pregnant – I never had that problem with either pregnancy! I did, however, have to ask people to stop telling me bad birth stories. I chose to only surround myself with positive birth energy :)

  5. says

I really wish that I had had a prenatal massage regimen (or at least more pedicures and foot rubs!) during my pregnancies. The aches were the worst part of my pregnancies for me. . .

  6. says

Thanks for all these tips so I could maintain a good vibes while I’m pregnant. I’ll surely visit the plastic surgery in Westchester a few months after my pregnancy so that I’ll get back my shape.

  7. Maria says

How about coconut oil and tons of fatty meats especially ground hamburger and pork and liver for vitamin a. Filtered water. Sea salt…
