I am always on the lookout for products and services that are affordable, high quality, and something that will make my life easier. It seems like it is getting harder and harder these days to weed out the worthy from the unworthy. Trust me, I have sacrificed too much time and money figuring out what products and service are of real value to our family.
For the past few months I have really been meditating on what Tiny's Waldorf inspired unschooling/homeschooling will look like for us. She is so passionate about that which interests her and I am really excited to follow her lead when it comes time to get more serious about things. She is still only 4 ½ so I have plenty of time!
Tiny is somewhat of a botanist. Since she was a wee one, little more than a year and a half, she has been able to identify trees, plants, herbs, flowers, and both wild and garden edibles. I have always been astounded with her ability to retain information about plant life. She can recognize things most people don't even know exist.
This makes my mama heart swell.
Tiny is an avid herbalist to. She loves to try any herb she can get her hands on and asks thoughtful questions about their “powers.” I am quite sure that a lot of this is due to the fact that she grew up with an herb garden and a mama who makes all kinds of herbal healing products, personal care products, tinctures, teas, and more.
I have been trying to find more opportunities for Tiny to get more hands on with herbs. She enjoys it and giving her the opportunity to explore her interest is the epitome of why I want to unschool/homeschool her. Why wait? I want to seize the moment now.
You know how the Universe works in mysterious ways and seems to provide right around the time you need it to? Well, my friend Amanda who blogs over at Natural Living Mamma has been working on a secret project for the bulk of 2013. I was on pins and needles over it because I KNEW it was going to be amazing. And guess what? It is more than amazing not just because it totally ties in to what I want to offer Tiny in her exploration of herbs but because what Amanda has created is SO unique and SO beneficial to the natural minded family. Seriously.
Let me brag about this for a second…
Just this month, Amanda launched Natural Herbal Living Magazine and the incredible monthly Herb Box program of which I am now an affiliate. Seriously folks…you need to pay attention to what this is all about because I guarantee it is going to take the natural minded family to a whole new level!
Amanda along with her esteemed team of contributors are joined forces to help anyone learn all about one herb a month, and how it is used by several different experienced herbalists. They also discuss different seasonal topics that relate to the natural life cycle of the plants.
The magazine is certainly geared towards the adult audience in terms of reading level and some comprehension level but the great thing is that the information is presented in a way that both the novice and the experienced herb user will benefit. It is also written in such a way that parents can easily explore the content with their children.
What will you find in Natural Herbal Living Magazine?
Most magazine issues will contain information about the herb of the month including:
- A detailed herbal monograph including historical and traditional uses of the herb of the month.
- An essential oil profile (if applicable)
- A flower essence profile (if applicable)
- Various recipes both food and herbal that utilize the herb of the month.
- Ecological impact of certain herbs.
- Ethnographic information regarding the traditional uses of some herbs in various cultures.
- Seasonal considerations of herbalism, when to plant, when and how to harvest, and when to create.
I totally love this magazine and as smitten as I am with it, I am even MORE smitten with the monthly Herb Box. Since I feel that the Herb Box is such a valuable offering, I want to focus the rest of the post on it exclusively.
Amanda was kind enough to send me the September box for review. The Herb of the Month is Rosemary which I was pretty stoked on. Tiny LOOOVES to nibble fresh Rosemary and it is one of my favorite herbs to cook with. But honestly, I had not done much without outside of adding it to main dishes.
The contents of the box were AWESOME! Tiny was jumping up and down with excitement as she viewed everything. The packaging is beautiful (and earth-friendly) and the offerings were very generous. I was actually surprised at how much was in this box!
September's box includes:
- 4 ounces of organic rosemary leaves
- 2 ounces of organic nettle leaf
- 1 ounce of organic calendula flowers
- Powdered rosemary hot chocolate elixir mix
- 6 ounces of organic raw apple cider vinegar
- 5 ml bottle of rosemary essential oil
- .25 ounces of rosemary flower essence
- Small mason jar
- Detailed and professional booklet on the herb of the month
What I adore about this box is that you have enough supplies to create all the herbal recipes in the booklet but you also have plenty of leftovers to experiment and create on your own!
This month's activities included making herbal hair rinses, rosemary infusions, rosemary hot chocolate, and creating a rosemary flower essence dosage bottle.
Tiny and I set to work (in the interest of a thorough review) and tackled everything in one morning. The directions were spot on, the educational material was interesting and easy for Tiny to understand, and the end products were fabulous!
All I can say is ROSEMARY HOT CHOCOLATE IS YUMMY! Who knew? I never would had I not gotten the Herb Box!
The hair rinses are pretty awesome as well. I've delved into these a bit before but I am loving the nettle and calendula blended with the rosemary. My hair was very soft and shiny and even Tiny (who typically is opposed to vinegar rinses) liked it!
Are you interested in your own box? You can order monthly based on your need and interested in a particular herb or you can sign up for a monthly subscription. Here is what you will typically get:
• A professionally printed booklet full of useful information and recipes for the herb of the month.
• An ample amount (an average of 4-6 ounces) of the herb of the month to experiment with.
• The ingredients to featured recipes in the booklet, including, but not limited to, other complimentary herbs, oils, butters, containers, bees wax, honey, and anything else you may need.
The herb box is created to help you not only have an intellectual relationship with the herb of the month, but also a physical relationship with it. By working hands on with the herb you are able to experience how it works with your body! The herb box will include the ingredients to make several of the recipes from the magazine so you can have the experience you need to make your own herbal concoctions.
As herbs and ingredients are purchased in bulk, the monthly herb box is a steal at only $30 per month plus $10 shipping. You can save even more by subscribing to the box monthly, which includes a 10% discount!
What I love about the content of the box is that they are ALL FREE OF Gluten, Dairy, Nuts, Eggs and Soy. Pretty allergy friendly!
I am excited to see what future boxes have in store. I think this is a great activity and learning opportunity for Tiny. She gets to work with her hands, gain knowledge, and use and enjoy the fruits of her labor. It honestly does not get much better than that!
