Parenting is a journey. It is a journey which requires strength, fortitude, compassion, patience, flexibility, trust, but most importantly love.
As a new parent, it is so easy to become overwhelmed with the idea of HOW you should parent your child. Should you parent using rewards and punishment? Should you put your child in time-out? How do you deal with lying? What approach is best for setting boundaries?
There are a lot of different parenting philosophies to wade through. Expert after expert claim that you must do this OR your child will turn out a certain way. More emphasis is placed on “training” your child. Less emphasis is placed on parenting from a foundation of love and not fear or control.
Becky Eanes and Laura Ling are two mothers who have come together to create a powerful resource for any parent wishing to either make the transition away from the more “mainstream” approach to parenting or for those parents who are already practicing a more gentle parenting approach but are finding themselves “stuck” when it comes to certain stages of their child development and subsequent behaviors.
Positive Parenting In Action – The How To Guide For Putting Positive Parenting Principals Into Practice In Early Childhood is brilliant in my opinion. This 69 page Ebook is chalk full of information about how to move away from restrictive, controlling parenting practices and into a more natural approach which fosters cooperation and harmony.
I really like these two passages from the introduction of Positive Parenting In Action. I think they really set the tone for the entire book.
“Positive Parenting isn't a method, but a philosophy – a way of seeing children and our relationship with them.”
“There is an abundance of resources available which tell parents why traditional parenting practices are not optimal, but few help parents learn what to do in place of traditional practices. In this eBook, we'll discuss the principles of Positive Parenting, and then we will go through many scenarios to show you what it looks like when these principles are put into action. The purpose of these scenarios is to serve as a guideline, an example of Positive Parenting in action.”
This Ebook will help you understand how and why you need to change your parenting mindset. It will show you how to begin the process of attachment in infancy. It will help you understand the importance of and how children develop a self-concept. Positive Parenting In Action will then take you on a journey of becoming a gentler, more effective parent.
Why do I love this Ebook and why would you want to have your very own copy? Easy!
- It is written by two moms who have been in the trenches and are employing a positive parenting philosophy in raising their own children. They walk the talk so to speak.
- Becky and Laura outline the principals of positive parenting in a way that really makes sense. No abstract philosophical meanderings here.
- It is direct, easy to understand, and divided into small sections so as to not overload you with information.
- The approaches presented are practical.
- The scenarios presented as examples of different behaviors and parenting reactions/approaches to addressing the behavior are true to life. I for one have either had many of the scenarios occur or could envision them occurring.
- Almost every typical parenting challenge is covered. Lying, tantrums, back talk, sibling rivalry, mealtimes, whining, gaining cooperation, peer influence, and so much more are addressed.
My favorite aspect of this Ebook is how it is laid out. When you get to the section addressing specific parenting challenges, the authors have really done a wonderful job of helping you get the most out of each area covered. They provide a short scenario. They then move you to possible motivations for the behavior. Next, you are provided with a specific plan of action from a positive parenting mindset. No brain overload here. Just great information which is easy to digest and implement.
I asked Becky if she would kindly share a little bit more about herself, her two websites, and her book. Luckily, she was game and I think you will really enjoy learning a bit more about this wonderful mama!
I have been a long time follower of your site, Positive Parenting as well as Positive Parenting, Toddlers and Beyond. When you began your sites, what were you hoping to accomplish?
When I began PPTB, I was looking for answers on how to gently parent a toddler. I was adrift myself, and I guessed that other parents of toddlers were too, so I began to do a lot of research for myself, and PPTB is where I shared it with other parents. The blog came along later, after I felt I'd learned enough to be able to write about it and hopefully help others who were in the place I was just a year or so before. I wanted it to be sort of a lighthouse for the other parents who are adrift like I was.
I am in love with Positive Parenting In Action. Really, it is brilliant. What motivated you to write this Ebook?
I knew there was a need for practical how-to information for parents making this paradigm shift. We hear of a lot of questions on PPTB, and also the comments on the articles we post let us know that parents understood the concept but were unsure how to implement this in real life experiences. Learning to parent in a new way is much like learning any other skill. First you learn the information, then practice the skill, then you've got it! Take driving for example. You take a driver's ed class and learn all the “rules” of the road, which is much like what most of the parenting articles and books are today, just information, but left many parents hanging, just like getting out of a driver's ed class and being handed the keys without any practical driving experience. This book is the driving practice; the how-to once you get behind the wheel.
Is this valuable resource an extension of your first book, The Newbie's Guide to Positive Parenting? Should parents read your first Ebook before tackling Positive Parenting In Action?
PP in Action is a stand alone resource and is really for parents who already get the concept but need help applying the principles. If someone is brand new to this philosophy, then I would recommend getting the Newbie's Guide first, as it is more information-based. The Newbie's Guide is the driver's ed class, so to speak.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing parents who want to employ a positive parenting approach with their children? Is there one area of positive parenting that seems to be a stumbling block for the vast majority of parents?
I think the biggest challenge is just being able to strip away all those layers of “knowledge” we've been fed by media, family, friends, and culture about how children “should be” raised and allowing ourselves the freedom to choose love and relationship even when it goes against the grain. It's challenging to stand apart from the crowd, but the more of us who stand apart, the bigger our crowd will get. A common stumbling block is getting the significant other on board, which I wish I had an easy answer for. I was lucky in that my husband was raised with positive parenting and so it comes easy and natural for him.
One is one piece of advice you would give to a new parent who is unfamiliar with positive parenting?
Trust your heart and allow yourself to follow it.
