This might come as a shock to some of you, but I am a little obsessed with coconut oil. I am also very picky about which coconut oil I use! Until recently, there were only three brands that I personally used and would recommend to all of you.
About a month ago, a received an email from one of the owners/partners of Nutri-Coco asking if I was interested in trying their product. I immediately checked out their website, liked what I saw, and decided to give their coconut oil a try. I am really happy that I did.
Although Nutri-Coco is new on the scene, this small, family owned business has over 50 years of tradition and expertise in the coconut industry. They believe in responsibly providing a premium product that can help positively change the health and well-being of individuals around the world. That is certainly something I can get behind!
The Nutri-Coco Premium Virgin Coconut Oil is extracted from fresh coconuts grown in the rich soils of the Philippines. There are no chemicals involved in the entire process. It is unrefined coconut oil which means no bleaching or deodorizing. Interestingly enough, Nutri-Coco has one of the lowest moisture contents compared to many brands of coconut oils. The lower the moisture content the longer the shelf life.
Most importantly, Nutri-Coco Coconut Oil is cold pressed through their very own special centrifuge process. This process allows Nutri-Coco to produce a very pure coconut oil that is virtually 100% pure and unaltered.
So what did I think of it?
First, I had to wrestle the jar away from Tiny. (You might recall that she inherited my obsession with coconut oil, only she takes it a step further and hides it from me!) I did a close inspection of the contents of the jar. The coconut oil was in a pure white solid state. No sediment or specks of brown which was a good sign! This means that Nutri-Coco is creating a very high quality virgin coconut oil.
After a visual inspection, I opened the jar and gave it the sniff test. Mmmmm….the light coconutty fragrance that greeted me was like a hug from an old friend. Trust me when I tell you that there ARE subtle differences in the scent of different brands of coconut oil. I personally prefer the lighter scent which is exactly what Nutri-Coco offered.
Finally, I was ready to do the official taste test! Now, I must preface this by saying that I have been consuming a lot of coconut oil lately and have been getting really gaggy over it. I add a lot into my cooking and baking but I still have been taking several tablespoons per day straight off the spoon. It had been wearing on my taste buds for some reason and even adding it into tea wasn't helping me avoid a little gag here and there. (Gags happen. I go through little spurts like this every few months. It is usually because I am dealing with some sort of health issue.) But enough about all that…
I put a nice hunk of coconut oil on my spoon, closed my eyes (ok, not really…just trying to be more dramatic), and took my taste buds on a tropical vacation! Nutri-Coco was just what the doctor ordered! My palate needed a change of pace and this coconut oil came along at the right time.
Nutri-Coco definitely had a coconut flavor but it is quite mild. In fact, when I added into my tea, I did not taste it at all. It was quite easy to enjoy by the spoonful especially when I added a teeny bit of vanilla to it. Mmmmm….
Tiny, being the coconut oil aficionado that she is, wanted in on the taste testing. I handed her the jar, a spoon, and didn't see her for about 10 minutes. When she resurfaced, she had a smile on her face, and a noticeably reduced amount of coconut oil in the jar. I went out on a limb and assumed that she liked it. A lot.
The last thing that I love about this company is that Mark, one of the owners/partners, is REALLY friendly, very responsive, and has a great sense of humor! I really hope that his business grows and does well. I am a big believer in small business and Nutri-Coco is certainly one I will stand behind!
